1950s Sambo Fashions Purple and White Silk Shirtwaister Dress
Description
Sublime mid to late 1950s shirtwaister dress by Sambo Fashions, cut in a classic fit and flare style. It has a wide, bertha style collar and three quarter length sleeves which are slightly tapered. The dress fastens down the front with hook and eyes, alternating buttons and poppers and finishing at around mid hip. These fastenings are all hidden under a placket. It features heavy pleating to the bodice, and a full flounce skirt with white mesh underlay. The dress is cut from a purple and white dogtooth printed silk and is lined in a white silk, making it cool and comfortable for the wearer. The effect of the layers has been captured without an additional underskirt but one could be worn if desired to further accentuate the waist.
This is the finest silk 1950s day dress we have had in our collection for over 10 years; it is extremely well made and cared for, and without alterations. Collectable British labels are getting harder to source in this condition which is nothing short of superb. We have been unable to find a stain or fault of any note. The dress would best fit a UK size 8-10 or US 4-6.
