Description
This super colourful Jennifer Lucas skirt suit reminded me so much of the pivotal early Dolce & Gabbana catwalk shows from the spring/summer 1993 collection. We added runway shots to the listing to show you how fun these pieces are layered with frilled and tassled petticoats and blouses. I can't help but wonder if the duo were inspired by these original silk patchwork skirts from the 1970s, which were often made from vintage fabrics by skilled artisans during fashion's 'hippy decade'.

This early 1970s ensemble features a waistcoat style sleeveless top in a bold print of violet, aubergine, green, pink and yellow squares, interspersed with graphic and floral design panels to create a patchwork effect. It's quite possible that these floral panels are earlier prints from the 1960s. It has a lovely soft purple rayon lining and four fabric colour buttons running down the front, with a classic pointed collar. The skirt has a 1.5-inch-wide plum purple waistband with the fabric gathered around the waist to create volume, and the inside is lined with a fine silk organza. It is finished with a wide plum purple strip around the hem, matching the colour of the waistband, and fastens with a rear central original metal zip and two hook and eye closures.

The ensemble could be worn together, or as separates, and are perfect examples of the playful approach to dressing which dominated the mid-70s. This is a British couture made set constructed to a very high quality. Both pieces are in great vintage condition, with no flaws or stains to note, and would best fit a size 8-10 UK, or 4-6 US.
