This sensational 1970s silk couture skirt and cape ensemble with multicoloured check design is of superb quality and in excellent vintage condition with a contemporary high fashion aesthetic. The pure silk fabric is a gorgeous combination of vermilion and pastel tones in over-sized check with a captivating surface interplay. The voluminous floor length skirt flares out from the waistband in soft folds and has a single frilled tier in purple check a third of the length from the hem. There is a band of acrylic inside the tier to reinforce the shape with a crinoline effect and a central zip fastening at the reverse. The cape draws in at the neckline with a tie to form a high-necked Victoriana style collar, and has a draw string tie at the waist. The front of the cape is open allow freedom of movement when worn. As there are no arm holes it is designed to envelope the torso. The overall effect is dramatic and deeply elegant. This magnificent set could also be worn as separates and is a rare piece for the discerning collector as it is undoubtedly from a noteworthy designer whose label has fallen off. Would best suit a US size 0-2, UK 6 in view of the petite waistband.
