1986 Emanuel Ungaro Black White Plaid Skirt Suit with Velvet Trim

This 1980s Emmanuel Ungaro monochrome plaid skirt-suit was designed for the Parallele line - a high end ready to wear collection which featured on the runways of Paris. Having found photographs of very similar items as part of Ungaro’s Fall 1986 Couture collection, we believe this ensemble dates to the same year. The jacket and skirt are tailored from a monochrome black and white plaid wool and detailed with smooth black silk velvet. The jacket is cut to a blouson fit that is typical of 1980s designs, anchored by a wide black velvet waistband that ties at the side of the waist through a D-shaped black buckle. It has a high black velvet collar which fastens at the side of the neck with three high-shine faceted buttons. The jacket has a black velvet flap which cascades down the front of the jacket. These asymmetric necklines were one of the designer’s signature flourishes and were revisited throughout the collections of the mid 1980s to early 1990s. The jacket is unlined. It has ribbed cuffs which are elasticated and add a casual feel.

The skirt is tailored to a high-waist pencil silhouette from coordinating plaid wool. It is lined with black satin and fastens at the side of the hip with a hidden black tonal zip and a small black button. It has hidden in-seam pockets on the hips.

In superb, barely worn vintage condition - no faults noted. It has no composition label and is labelled a size 14, but the fabric has no stretch and vintage sizes run a lot smaller. Our model's sizes are: Bust: 33" (84cm), Waist 26" (66cm), Hips: 34" (86cm), Height 5' 7" (170cm) and she's a size UK 6, US 2. Although the jacket is roomy, the skirt is less so at the waist so the ensemble is a best fit for up to a UK 10, US 6 with some flexibility on fit for the individual components.
