2004 Runway Yves Saint Laurent by Tom Ford Black Silk Jacket
Description
Tom Ford stepped down from his role as Creative Director at both Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent in 2004. Made in France, this jacket was created by Ford in 2004 for the final show he designed for the house of Yves Saint Laurent. This exact design walked the runway in green, pink and grey in Yves Saint Laurent’s lauded Fall 2004 show.
The jacket has panelled construction and a flared, peplum waist which creates an hourglass shape on the wearer. Tailored from pure silk in a deep charcoal black, it is a shorter style jacket which holds its impeccably tailored shape and is finished with elaborate details. The front fastens with knotted black velvet ribbons and fabric loops which add a decadence typical of Ford’s designs for the house. It has curved, layered lapels and an extra hidden lapel which can be buttoned up to the collar to create a higher, closed neckline at the front - this lapel fastens with hidden pearlescent grey buttons. This collection brought back Saint Laurent’s dramatic, pointed shoulder that curves upwards like the roof of a pagoda and which was made famous by his Chinese collection in 1977. The sleeve is finished with an elongated, soft black cuff which falls elegantly over the hand. At the bust, there are two embroidered details which look like faux-slit pockets. These are also adorned with knotted black velvet fastenings and fabric loops. This jacket is fully lined in black silk.
The jacket is in fantastic vintage condition with no faults of any note and looks barely worn. The label states that it is 100% Silk. It is labelled a French size 40, a UK 12 or US 8 but Tom Ford sizing is notoriously small and this may be better suited to smaller sizes. The fabric has no stretch to it. A super piece for a collector of Ford's work or the House of Saint Laurent.
