Description
This exceptional, circa 1970, Adolfo Sardina black velvet embroidered maxi skirt is in excellent archival condition and ready to be worn for any statement occasion. It is expertly embroidered with luxurious pink, blue and gold threads that create a beautiful repeating mandala effect pattern. The skirt is made of a thick black velour velvet and fully lined with a semi-satin polyester fabric on the inside. The embroidered velour has been pleated all around the waist, which creates a deliciously playful volume to the skirt. The skirt is quite thick in nature, so it has the potential to keep you warm in the winter without looking bulky; it would look sensational paired with a form-hugging bodysuit for the red carpet or a black turtleneck sweater for a dinner party.

Some of Adolfo’s finest and earliest work was recycling vintage and antique patchwork fabrics into maxi skirts, very similar in style to this one. The skirt, which looks as good as the day it was made, can fit up to a size UK 12 or US 8 with the skirt falling at the hips rather than the waist for smaller sizes.

Notes on Designer:

Adolfo Sardina was renowned for creating beautiful, intricate garments to haute couture standards designed to be layered and worn together. He achieved international fashion fame as one of Nancy Reagan’s favourite designers during her years as first lady after being introduced by Betsy Bloomingdale. He started his career as a milliner and apprenticed under both Cristobel Balenciaga and Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. He dressed many of society’s most prominent women for almost three decades after he opened his own fashion house in 1962, including the Duchess of Windsor, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Babe Paley and Gloria Vanderbilt.
