Description

The 1976 haute couture Yves Saint Laurent Operas Ballets Russes catwalk is considered to be one of the most triumphant collections of the 20th century and influenced fashion design for several seasons as the decade headed toward the 1980s.

This forest green felted wool jacket is the ready to wear version from his Rive Gauche label of 1979. It's a high collar jacket with the central button stand featuring a black woven cord trim along the jacket edges and embellishing the bottom of the cuffs and pockets. This is quite a unique central button stand whereby the button holes are partially hidden at the point where the black woven trim meets the green felt. This gives a very neat edge to the jacket when fastened. It has a slightly gathered puff sleeve and features three front pockets; a smaller handkerchief pocket and two larger flat facing pockets. The wool fabric is beautiful quality and it is lined in a copper brown acetate.

This has the larger and older Rive Gauche label and is marked a French 38 or UK 10. In very good vintage condition overall. On close inspection we note a couple of areas where the felt wool has thinned on the left sleeve close to the inside arm seam; presumably by moth in the past - not holes as such as the weave is still intact.  The lining is still in good condition with the odd age-appropriate mark. Very much a collector’s item or for the fashion historian or connoisseur of vintage fashion.
