Description

Impressive genuine 1930s Bakelite brooch made up of six rows of multicoloured strips of bakelite in rainbow hues of red, orange, yellow, green and brown - colours which were given food-related names such as Creamed Corn, Butterscotch, Egg Yolk, and Salmon. Originally used for industrial purposes thanks to its ability to withstand heat, moulded Bakelite and its cast cousin, Catalin, made the jump to costume jewellery in the 1920s and had their heyday in the 1930s and 1940s.

Designed in a faux-belt style with a vibrant green buckle across it. At the rear, there is a long silver-toned metal C-clasp. This novelty brooch being one of the more decadent examples makes an impressive statement thanks to its substantial size and colourful appearance.

Condition wise, this is in very fine collectable condition with no flaws to the Bakelite or clasp. Tested for Bakelite using Simichrome.
