1930s Couture Rainbow Floral Crepe Maxi Dress with Red Sash Belt
Description
This outstanding 1930s vibrantly printed maxi dress is one of the best we have ever had in Circa's collection. From France and made to couture standards, the fabric is wonderful; tailored from a high quality crepe patterned with clusters of painterly roses in bold jewel and contrasting soft pastel tones. It has a V-neckline, which gives way to a substantial row of fabric-covered buttons which fall the length of the front, ending just below the knee and forming a slit at the front of the skirt. The sleeves are generously cut to a bell-sleeve style which gather at the cuffs. The cuffs close with three fabric-covered buttons which fasten through fabric loops. The stand-out detailing of this dress is the red fabric scallop trim that adorns the front, sweeping up over the shoulders and across the back, creating a tromp l’oeil collar. This scallop detail also trims the slit pockets at the waist. The dress falls to ankle length with a playful, swirling skirt. At the waist is a detachable belt in the same red cloth as the scallop trim. The dress is unlined.
Very ahead of its time, it hints at the tea dresses that came in the next decade, and the scallop detailing and vibrant prints of today’s most beloved labels. In outstanding vintage condition, particularly for a piece of nearly 90 years of age with no faults and is completely wearable. We are sure this is someone special but alas the labels have been lost to the passage of time and she is an unsigned beauty. Please double-check our measurements below as the fabric has no stretch. We estimate a good fit for up to a UK 10 or US 6.
