Description
This is a very fine example of late 1940s to early 1950s evening wear by British designer Norman Young who made high end occasion wear for department stores and specialist boutiques during the 1940s - 1960s. Made from a man-made georgette, it is a sweeping and romantic floor length affair. It has an empire line bust and a wide waistband from which the skirt is tightly gathered to accentuate the female form. The gathered cap sleeves are finished with a frilled edge that echoes the design along the scoop neck. The georgette fabric, whilst sheer, is layered over a heavier-weight crepe underdress which acts as a liner. Only the cap sleeves have been left sheer. The dress fastens to the side with a zip that is original to the era but is a different colour - quite possibly a replacement.

The condition is absolutely extraordinary for a dress of its age and there are no faults of any note. Evening dresses from this era are increasingly difficult to source and this is a best fit for up to a UK size 10 or US 6.
