1989 Thierry Mugler Les Atlantes Collection Black Asymmetric Dress
Description
Thierry Mugler 1989 S/S "Les Atlantes" dress; the collection was inspired by deep sea creatures through a futuristic lens. Tailored to a deceptively simple long-sleeve, mid-calf silhouette, it is cut from a lightweight, fluid black crepe cloth. In a signature Mugler move, the hips are adorned with curved panels of lined black crepe that hold their shape and add definition, echoing and emphasising the body's curves. I also like to think that these are representing 'fish gills' and there were many runway references along with the 'fin shaped' sleeves. They are long and are fastened with black tonal snap closures up to the elbow. The cuffs split and hang over the back of the hand with two jagged points. The neckline marks this piece as distinctly Mugler for those in the know. It has an avant-garde cut-out, an angular take on a classic V-neckline which echoes the angles of the sleeves and hips. The entire length of the back of the dress is fastened with tonal snap closures. This dress is unlined.
Made in France, this piece is in truly excellent vintage condition with no flaws of any note. The fabric composition is 55% Acetate, 45% Viscose and the dress is labelled a vintage French size 42, which equates to a UK 12 or US 8. Please check our measurements below as it is probably better for the next size down - Mugler tends to run slimmer in the hip and there is no stretch to it.
