Description

Americans Mark Badgley and James Mischka, the design duo behind Badgley Mischka rose to prominence in the 1990s, helping to redefine the era’s red-carpet sophistication by creating sleek gowns infused with the effortless glamour of Old Hollywood. By the end of the 20th century, Badgley Mischka dominated the eveningwear market; Anjelica Huston, Carrie Underwood, Eva Longoria, Brooke Shields, Lauren Hutton and Sharon Stone were among the bold-faced names that headlined campaigns, which was “just the cherry on top.” Badgley Mischka also dressed some of the first ladies in the past 37 years, as well as socialites. Badgley said, “Let’s face it, our clothes were special occasion. We didn’t really dress people for the office.”

This dress was likely adapted for a high-end retailer from one of the runway presentations circa 1997-1999. A much favoured colour by the brand, similar less-covered designs walked numerous collections during this period. The striking floor-length design combines shimmer, structure, and delicate surface detailing. The bodice features a fitted sequinned base in gunmetal silver, overlaid with an ethereal layer of fine grey net. This sheer overlay forms three-quarter-length sleeves and a high neckline, exquisitely hand-beaded with icy floral motifs composed of silver sequins, metallic thread, and sheer glass beads, creating an effect reminiscent of frost spreading across glass. The neckline is trimmed with tiny silver beads, while the beadwork intensifies toward the waist, ending in a jagged, zigzag hem with a raw edge that reveals glimpses of the sequinned underlayer beneath. Falling from the waist, the full silver taffeta skirt is softly pleated for volume and lined with a coordinating silk slip, giving it a fluid, lustrous drape. The net bodice fastens at the back with a row of rhinestone buttons and fabric loops, while the sequinned inner bodice closes beneath with a tonal zip and is supported by delicate spaghetti straps.

This dress is in excellent vintage condition and from a time when this brand made high-end red carpet and event dresses. It is labelled a US 12, but vintage sizes vary hugely so please check our measurements below as the fabric has no stretch. It runs on the smaller side and is better suited in modern sizes to a UK 12 or US 8.
