1970s Christian Dior Black and Silver Lame Skirt Suit (4 pieces)
Description
This Christian Dior set is from the late 1970s to early 1980s and made from a metallic black and silver lightweight silk lame. The design of the weave has an almost celestial look - oval spots with the larger of the two sizes having a small tail, like a comet. Remarkably, all four pieces have survived and this set includes; a blouse, skirt, belt and matching scarf. The ensemble was designed during Marc Bohan's tenure as creative director of Dior which lasted for over 30 years from 1958 - 1989.
The wide scoop neck of the blouse and oversized fit paired with the belt creates an alluring hour glass shape on the wearer. Three black buttons close the sleeve's balloon shape cuffs. The pencil skirt has three wide pleats either side of the waist band and falls below the knee to mid-calf, depending on the wearer's height. It fastens with a concealed zip and button at the back and is fully lined. The fabric is an exceptionally high quality 74% silk and 26% lurex blend and I love the versatility of the scarf which can be tied around the neck, hair or even as an alterative belt style.
This complete ensemble looks barely worn with the fabric having no issues. The belt has a diamante clasp and we note a few tiny stones missing - very hard to spot and not noticed when worn. Will fit a range of sizes up to a US size 8 or UK size 12.
Notes on Fashion House:
Christian Dior was one of the most influential French fashion designers of the late 1940s and 1950s. After the stark dress apparel of the war years, women were seeking a more elegant and feminine look, which Dior created with his "New Look" line of clothing. His designs, which graced celebrities from actress Rita Hayworth, to former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, to ballerina Margot Fonteyn, contributed much needed panache to an era of post-war prosperity. Although there were criticisms, particularly by feminists, of his extravagant use of fabric and his decorative use of restrictive corsets and crinoline, Dior himself described the "New Look" as "youth, hope, and the future."
