Description

This beautiful 1920s antique sun parasol was handcrafted for the export market in Rangoon, Burma, now known as Myanmar. These parasols were often brought back as souvenirs during this era. It has a long handle carved from thick bamboo with a swirling wood effect. The handle is adorned with a loop of twisted wood which has been covered in fuchsia wool - this is used to hold the parasol closed and is detailed with a royal blue and soft chalk-pink tassel. The cobalt blue parasol is crafted from washi paper and is hand-painted in intricate detail with pretty florals and sailing ships. Inside, the incredible workmanship is apparent, with the ribs spaced evenly and spread out in a pretty radial pattern. The top of the parasol is crowned with a carved wooden finial which has been painted glossy black. It comes with the original grey-blue linen bag to protect it.

The parasol is in wonderful vintage condition, particularly for a piece of over a 100 years of age. We noted two tiny triangular shaped holes near to the edge; minor fraying of the silk at the ends, isolated in a few places between the ribs but the edges are crisp and straight. Would look great paired with our 1920s swimsuit!
