1960s Black Asprey Top Handle Crocodile Leather Bag
Description
This crocodile leather bag was retailed by British luxury accessories label Asprey in the 1960s and was possibly made by the leather goods firm and luxury House, Gucci. We have seen an identical bag bearing the House's stamp from the same period. Asprey was founded in Surrey, England in 1781 and have retailed from England's finest shopping street - New Bond Street, London, since 1847.
This boxy top handle bag is crafted from buffed black crocodile leather with the integumentary sensory organ pores present in each of the scales. It has a rectangular shape and a fold-over flap closure. The clasp is magnetic and it is housed within a gold-toned metal circle with an engraved edge. The handle is crafted from coordinating black leather which attaches onto the top of the bag through gold-tone metal D-rings. Inside and made of calf skin, it has two compartments. The large main compartment contains four pockets, one that closes with a zip. The inside is stamped with “Asprey London” in metallic gold ink.
This elegant bag is in remarkably good vintage condition with excellent patina developed over the decades. It has been carefully stored in its original dust bag which we will include. We noted a tiny bit of wear internally around the clasp but it is hardly noticeable. There are very light surface scratches to the exterior leather and interior calf leather; however, no dents or abrasions can be seen. The edges are very good with only very light wear noted. Handles are excellent and she is as good as it gets for a bag from this era. A perfect choice to compliment finely tailored clothes or complete a couture outfit from the period.
