Description

This late 1960s to early 1970s haute couture dress was made by Parisian Guy Laroche. Fashioned from sumptuous black velvet, it has long-sleeves and a maxi-length skirt. The neckline is wide and elegant, revealing the collarbones. The bottom of the skirt and the sleeves are finished with long and plump black velvet tassels that sway as the wearer moves. These tassels are embellished with rhinestones that glitter as they catch the light. The wide waistband of this dress cinches the relaxed column tailoring and it too is dotted with rhinestones of varying sizes. The inside of this gown is lined with matte black silk throughout. It fastens at the back with a hidden tonal zip and hook-and-eye. It is finished with the “Guy Laroche Paris” haute couture label from this period which indicates that it is crafted in the Atelier - there is no machine finishing on it and the work was done by hand.

This archival piece is in excellent vintage condition with no issues. Due to being couture made, it has no size or composition label, so please check the measurements below carefully. A best fit for a UK 8-10 or US 4-6 max.

Note on Designer: Founded in 1957 by Guy Laroche, the Parisian house became known for its polished balance of structure and ease, reflecting a modern, confident approach to femininity until Laroche’s death in 1989. Laroche’s designs emphasised clean lines, thoughtful tailoring, and luxurious textiles, offering couture that felt both sophisticated and wearable, and were embraced by figures including Faye Dunaway, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn.
