Description

This 1950s Mainbocher black silk and lace evening dress is of exceptional quality with some really elegant details. The bodice is fully lined and the bust has slight padding to add some extra support. The neckline is a beautiful sheer cowl neckline which has a cross bust detail at the front and is lower at the back. It has a full zip down the middle and is fitted at the waist band. There are two layers to the skirt; a full opaque column underlay of silk crepe de chine which is satin lined and a top layer. There are vertical lace panels on this top layer which add texture and a beautiful sense of movement. The dress is not quite full length but would sweep the ankle. Best fit for a US size 2 - 4, UK 6-8. Mainbocher founded the house of his name in 1930, initially in Paris but later he moved back to New York at the outbreak of WWII. Mainbocher made outstanding quality couture clothes and is best remembered for designing Wallace Simpson's dress to marry the Duke of Windsor. She later became the Duchess of Windsor.
